About the Designer
I have always enjoyed making things and with the help of my Mum, who made our clothes and dance costumes I tried my hand at dress making, crochet and embroidery. I made quite a lot of clothes under her instruction but must have been frustrating pupil as I always wanted to put my own stamp on it. I invariably added or amended the pattern and am still doing that now !
My creativity lead me to train as a dance teacher at the London College of Dance and Drama and become a Fellow of the ISTD. As well as having my own dance school in Buckinghamshire I have freelanced around the country which has given me many amazing opportunities over the years including the privilege teaching at the Royal Ballet School White Lodge.
During our time living on the West Coast of Scotland I loved being by the sea and could spend hours just watching the waves on the shore and the mountains beyond. Lots of beach combing produced a treasure of stones, shells, slate and glass all shaped and smoothed by the sea. The collection grew.
A chance opportunity and I rekindled my love of all things creative whilst working at a friends wool shop. The colours and textures I was surrounded by inspiring me to start ‘making’ again. At first it was crochet and jewellery making. Since moving back to Shropshire I have begun to sew, make bags and experiment with various ideas.
It seems that the Scottish scenery still has it’s pull for me in the materials I have chosen to use. Being self taught I am influenced by colours and texture and spurred on by all the designs and ideas in my head just waiting to emerge!!
Together with my husband, Richard Childs, who is a landscape Photographer we have a gallery in the Ironbridge Gorge at Maws Centre, Jackfield.
Lots more to see and we would love to meet you if you're in the area.
